So, who are the Moonrakers? This story takes place in Wiltshire, South-West England. Smugglers would pass through Wiltshire with goods illegally brought over the Channel from France (usually barrels or kegs of French Brandy). One night, when the moon was full, lighting the lush green English fields, some smugglers saw an Exciseman (tax collector) making his way toward them. To hide their goods they quickly threw the barrels of brandy into a nearby pond. When the Exciseman had gone they began to fish out the barrels with hay rakes. The man was suspicious, and came back asking them what they were doing. In reply, they told him it was obvious they were raking out the cheese they could see in the water. The Exciseman laughed at them for being so stupid and mistaking the reflection of the moon for cheese, and he rode off. The "Moonrakers" stopped raking for cheese, retrieved their barrels, and laughed as they continued their journey to sell the alcohol!
